Freelance Friday: My Writing Week 44 0

I’ve been ill all week so not much has been published, I’m afraid. Still not entirely well, so it’ll be a quiet weekend for me. As always, news posts and such aren’t represented below.

Following Suit: Useless App Cleanup Day 2

Jeremy Wright, of b5media fame, reminds us to clean up our computers of unnecessary applications, something I wholly support and do all the time. Jeremy is obviously running Windows (XP) on his laptop, so that makes it even more important as Windows has a habit of building up crap and slowing down your computer, but is by no means the only operating system that suffers from this.

Here are some tips on things you can do, no matter what OS is your poison, to speed up the performance of your computer:

  • Remove applications you don’t use.
  • Don’t autostart applications or features that you don’t need. Why have Winamp running if you’re an iTunes user?
  • Remove all the crap you’ve got on your desktop. Storing files on your desktop will generally slow down the computer’s boot process.
  • In fact, try and not autostart anything at all, unless it is something you need every day. The only thing it does is speed up the launch of some functionality, like Microsoft Office for instance. Better to have a slightly longer launch period for that particular application if you ask me.
  • Clean out your hard drive. The more you’ve got on, the longer it takes for the computer to do stuff. Don’t have unnecessary data lying around, backup and store in a safe place.
  • In particular, clean out your systems hard drive. If you’ve got several hard drives on your computer, try and have as little data as possible on the one containing your system, for the same reasons as above.
  • Defrag your hard drive. If you’re running Windows, this is a no-brainer, just do it, it’ll speed things up. If you think you don’t have to do these things under OS X, then you’re wrong. Do it.
  • Google for OS tweaks to speed up everything.

And while you’re at it, a backup is probably long overdue, right? Right.

Doesn’t it feel nice to remove all that virtual clutter on your computer? I always get that feeling of having done something good for my productivity after a massive cleanup action like this. Of course, it does take some time to go through all these steps, so you might want to do it when you’re not too busy, or have another workstation to play with.

Freelance Friday: My Writing Week 43 0

As most of you probably figured out, the announcement I hinted on previously was the sale of BloggerTalks and Live Arcade Review. I’m really happy to see Splashpress Media getting them back in business, dying sites are both stressful and bad for you, so I’m glad that worked out.

Another week of mostly newsy posts. On the positive side, I expect to run a closed beta test of the Notes Blog theme starting this afternoon. Got a few users that’ll play and develop for it. Stay tuned for more.

Moleskine and the Inspiration of Good Gear 6

Moleskine notebooks, one of the finer things in life

Moleskine notebooks, one of the finer things in life

As you know, I’m a huge Moleskine fan, with notebooks to the left and right. I’m definitely not alone in my obsession, lots of people swear by this line of notebooks. As I’ve written previously, I use notebooks for various things, such as keeping notes, write fiction, and I even switched to the Moleskine calendar this year, which proved to be a good choice.

It’s a bit nerdy I guess, to be so engrossed in a notebook, and a specific maker of notebooks at that, but I can’t help it. And besides, it does go the extra mile.

Moleskine notebooks are high quality gear, just like my Pilot G-2 pens are (although cheap, but they fit me). I like them for their quality, and the fact that they are great to write on in both 05 and 07 versions. The former I use for my smaller Moleskine notebooks, while the latter is my preferred size when writing in larger books, and in my calendar. Read more

BloggerTalks Under New Management 2

One of my first sites in English was the interview blog BloggerTalks. I started it because I was genuinely interested in what successful bloggers and entrepreneurs in the blogosphere had to say about obvious things, like how they got successful, and whatever was in the loop at the moment. I’m proud to say that I think there is some top notch interviews that everyone should read over at BloggerTalks. Just browse the interview archives and see for yourself.

However, during the last year or so, I just haven’t been able to keep up the weekly updating schedule I had planned. I’ve been offered a lot of help, and I’d like to give Tony Hung especially a big thank you, for being there early on. Read more

Freelance Friday: My Writing Week 42 0

I’ve been laying low this week on the freelance front. Most of my work have been behind the scenes, which will be very obvious on Devlounge in particular during the coming weeks. Other than that, my company’s fiscal year ended recently, so the paperwork has been bogging me down as well.

The news I’ve hinted on previously will be announced soon enough. Some of you have probably gathered what it is already…

Freelance Friday: My Writing Week 41 0

A tiny reminder regarding the Freelance Friday posts. These are not complete listings of my freelance work each week, I’m just highlighting the stuff I think deserves some recognition, or is just plain interesting. For instance, I’m doing a lot of news posts on The Blog Herald that won’t make it to these posts.

I’d also like to drop an ego link to Spyre Studios’ 25 kick-ass blog designs post, where Devlounge is featured. Thanks a lot, Jon!

I’m Getting Michael Arrington’s Fan Mail 0

This pinged in my inbox yesterday, in response to the TechCrunch getting sued story on The Blog Herald:

You little bitch:

Arrington is crying foul bc he’s scared. It’s patent litigation, moron. Why don’t you engage in some enterprise reporting and find out what’s REALLY going on. Start by reading today’s LA Times and SF Chronicle.

Arrington is a big ball of hot gas. He aint gonna give you no job. Might as well show some integrity and try to be fair in your reporting.

Douchebag.

Naturally, this is just someone having a hard time getting in touch with Michael Arrington, but obviously doesn’t want to sue, so she or he is trying to get his TechCrunch fan mail reach its destination through me. I find it hilarious, how about you?

The Notebook Blues 1

I write a lot. Sometimes more than I’d want to admit, but at the very least, we’re talking several pages daily. I actually used to write a lot more, in my teens, since I was one of those teenagers that wasn’t stimulated by school, hence I skipped classes and spent my time reading and writing. As you’ve probably gathered, fiction is an obsession of mine, fantasy in particular, although that follows my mood.

Add all the freelance writing I do, on a weekday basis, and my own projects, as well as my blogs, and you’ve got quite a lot of writing right there. Not to mention the fact that I always play with a handful of projects in one of my Moleskine notebooks at all times, not all writing is done on the computer. Read more

Freelance Friday: My Writing Week 40 0

This week has been rough on me, due to illness and a lot of appointments, making it hard to do any serious work. But I did that anyway, as you can see, and I also wrapped up a few things, which felt nice. More on that later.

As I said, news due soon!
