Embracing the dark hole known as Apple

It’s not a good day being Bill Gates in the TDH workspace. Windows have been pushed back, way back, due to my Ubuntu experiment (which in no way is scrapped, more later), and now the nail hit the coffin for real.

I’m writing this on my brand new MacBook, listening to David Bowie’s Heathen on iTunes. That felt appropriate.

For me, Apple computers over the years have been ridiculously over-priced. Some still are, like the MacBook Pro (needless to say, I went with a fully pimped out Standard), but there’s some reason to it nowadays. Sure, I would have gotten a hotter configuration for my money if I went Windows laptop PC, but since I have pretty high demands on my hardware due to the design business, it still feels I got pretty much for my money. Apple knows how to charge for stuff though, the brilliant bluetooth Mighty Mouse is pretty expensive, but I like it. And although I did get quite a bit of extra stuff for my MacBook, breaking the planned budget a bit, I still think it was a decent deal.

I’ll probably do a mini series of posts on switching from Windows XP to Mac OS X later so I won’t delve on that here, but it sure was intuitive enough for me. Then again, I’m a pretty experienced computer user, so…

Going Apple means you should go Mac outside of the office as well. The good thing about closed systems, like Mac sure is, is that most things involved work like a charm together. They keep a close leash on developers and manufacturers, compared to the anarchy of the Linux world, or the vast number of choices involved when you’re in the Windows space. I never liked iTunes, for instance, and I still think it’s lacking on some parts, but overall it works great on a Mac, and that makes me want to expand. As in Apple TV. As in iPod, which I never go. As in the AirTunes products, as well as going all AirPort when they release the new version with extended reach, something I’ve wanted anyway. Since wireless extenders from D-Link sucks…

I draw the line by the Cinema displays though. Yes, they kick ass, totally! Amazing, truly amazing. But that doesn’t merit the price.

Still, I’m like $1,500 worth of stuff just from the Apple store that I want, and are planning on getting. That doesn’t include software (Adobe’s Creative Suite CS3 soon please).

I better get cracking on some more design gigs…

    What do you think?
