Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog

Three things to make your blog post more read

So you wrote The Best Blog Post In The World and now you’re sitting back to receive your praise in the comments?

And it’s quiet, oh so quiet?

Probably you’re doing something wrong, and assuming it isn’t the content that sucks maybe this is what you should do to get more people to read your post!

Lighten it up with images
Just text is boring, no matter what the letters actually spell out. Chunks of text isn’t very engaging to look at and you’ll have an uphill start with the reader. Lighten it all up with an image or two to illustrate your topic. And yes, I know I’m not doing it here, which is stupid but also a conscious choice in lack of launching my actual site. (Which in turn is just as stupid – don’t make my mistake!)

Reward comments
Now, I’m not talking money for comments here. No, make it rewarding to comment a post. Answer and involve yourself in the discussions, make sure that the comments that are posted gets displayed in “recently comments” lists (read about a good Wordpress plugin here), and if you have a decent amount of discussions on your site you can also make “best of” posts every now and then to link them again. That makes your readers more inclined to post comments and participate.

Tell the world about your post and existence
E-mail and IM people you know, submit your post to social bookmarking sites, flaunt you knowledge (in a civilized manner) on forums and in comments on other blogs which sports the same topic… Also: swap links with like-minded sites, host competitions and be a good chap all around, it’ll do you good and make you feel better. Get the link out there, because if you’re to reap the reward you need visitors.
