It’s not just me that realized how blogging stinted my writing, it seems. My colleague Andrew writes about how blogging killed his fiction writing, something I certainly can relate to! You might remember that I started publishing short stories from the world of Orn to get myself started writing fiction again.
It worked. I am writing fiction again, with a lot of ideas in the pipeline. Sure, I’m still struggling with the fact that other writing fills some sort of need, which makes me less hungry to jot down stories, but on the other hand, I’m spending more time thinking about what fiction I want to write with the time at hand.
Welcome to reality, no one, not even Stephen King, can write all the time. I felt really sad when I reached that conclusion…

What about blogging about fiction?
This is interesting. As a freelance writer, I do quite a bit of corporate writing work, which in the past year or so has translated mostly into blogging. Personally, I enjoy creative writing. When I got mono earlier this year, I wasn’t able to do my blogging work for my clients or post to my own blogs, but I did feel inspired to write a novel. Only I couldn’t write, so I dictated it. Since going back to my work writing, I’ve had very little creative writing flow — until I recently took a brief hiatus, at which time I began writing slam poetry again. Go figure.

Good question. Maybe you are more into the right kind of thing in your blogging so that it would work, but honestly I think any blogging, or writing work in any way really, would hurt your fiction writing. Then again that might be just me.

Exactly! Thanks for sharing.
I have used my blog as a public forum in which to discuss my fiction projects in an ongoing dialogue with my muse. I agree there is a tendency to be sloppy, but like with all other writing, the author always has a choice. I try to keep my readers in mind while I blog just as I do in fiction.
