Google has added themes to Gmail, which means that you now can get the clean webmail interface to look cluttered and full of crap. I’m pretty sure the novelty will wear off, but personally I’m switching between the desk theme and the terminal one, out of spite I guess. With my clutter thinking I’m pretty sure I’ll be using one of the more sane one soon enough.
Biggest disappointment was the minimalist theme. It’s just grey and boring, not at all clean and stylish the way it should be.
Haven’t got the themes functionality yet? I’ve got some pictures! Read more →
Jason Calacanis quitting blogging has been widely reported, switching over to a newsletter format instead. I’m on that list, and I’m happy to say there’s been plenty of interesting e-mails from the Mahalo guy already. This isn’t surprising, the e-mail format doesn’t stress you to write on a daily basis, so Jason can stick to the good stuff, leaving out things not being as necessary to comment.
The last e-mail was on Knol (Wikipedia entry), Google’s “we’re not in the content business” project that so obviously is in the content business. I think that Knol is a step in the wrong direction for Google, if they want to keep their search domination. Think about it, how reliable is a search engine if some sources of information will be valued higher because they are owned by the search engine itself? We already get YouTube results pushed out on every search, and Knol is ranked high already, of course. Read more →
I’ve been running the Safari 3 beta on Mac for quite some time now, feeling happy about it. Unfortunately, although Apple claims it should work well with Google Apps, it seems it can get the users in quite a fix.
See, Google just restricted my access to my Gmail account!
What did I do with it? Well, Safari doesn’t manage to send mails every now and then, and that means you need to stop and click send again. Same goes sometimes when you’re browsing your e-mails and clicks on links just won’t register. Then you need to reload the Gmail page and you’re golden again.
That’s what I did. That’s when Google did this:

That’s for reloading Gmail, people. Nothing more, nothing less. I do not use my account for spamming, sending large files, storing data or anything out of the ordinary. I just e-mail with it. I’m not even close to a quota or anything. Again, I’m just e-mailing with it!
And that’s for reloading Gmail!
This is not acceptable. I no longer see Gmail as a good first hand choice for e-mail because of this. It was easier to cope with before, when Safari just didn’t work well with Gmail, but this is outrageous.
Be warned. It could happen to you, and it might even happen under other browsers. Web hiccups isn’t exactly that uncommon, now is it?
Google need to get its act together, and Apple needs to fix Safari’s issues. Now.
Edit: It’s on Digg, please digg it if you’d like!
Update! They’ve open up access to my Gmail account again.
