Searching for the Ideal Workstation 1

Right this moment, I’m installing Debian in a virtual machine on my Mac Pro. Earlier today I installed Kubuntu, and managed to crash everything while installing Ubuntu, which was probably due to VMware Fusion (reviewed here) not getting a response from me, rather than an issue with Ubuntu itself. These are open source Linux distributions, free to use, and usually a lot more secure than the other operating systems. That would be Windows and OS X.

As I said, I’m playing around on my Mac Pro, so you’ve probably guessed I’m not entirely happy with OS X, Apple’s own OS. I used to run Windows, so I know what I’m comparing with. Read more

Wanting the Leopard 1

Leopard, mmm…I’ve got the OS X 10.5 Leopard munchies right now, although I decided not be an early adopter. The reason for this is that I really don’t have time to fiddle around with crashing workstations, my schedule is tight as it is.

But I did get around to pick up Leopard for my MacBook, figured I’d test things out. And lo, it appears that all of my crucial apps are working!

So I have the munchies, because Spaces on a three display setup would be so bloody wicked! Right now I’m trying to read up on what applications are having problems. My main concern is Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2. The former is said to work, but I’ve yet to find anything about the latter.

Have you updated to Leopard, and did you run into any application issues? Let me know in the comments, please.

Using a blog post to start my day 0

One of the biggest obstacles for me is getting started every morning. I always plan ample time to have breakfast, enjoy my first (out of three) cup of coffee and read the newspaper. That way I feel I can ease into existence, if you know what I mean.

Some days it doesn’t work, however. Today I’m 30 minutes behind schedule and I haven’t completed my third java cup yet.

I’m a mood person. If I don’t feel like writing or designing, I can still do it but I won’t be pleased with the result. Those days - and they come and go on an almost regular basis - used to be stressful. I guess they still are, but I’m more attuned to it nowadays. That’s age, I won’t stress out just because I didn’t maximize production 100%. You know why? Because it’s impossible! Name the company that wants its employees to work at full concentration a whole day and I’ll tell you they’re setting fire to themselves, and probably have a ground consisting of paper at that!

Anyway, blogging is a great way for me to get started. As you’re well aware I’m not doing much of it at the moment. Not here and not at 901am. The reason is partly due to the fact that I work less during the summer (although today’s rain will see that I’ll have a full workday) but the fact is that I’m in a transition phase. This blog will change, and others will launch or relaunch. I’m not building the network I set out to do because due to other engagements I make more money elsewhere and we all need to pay the bills, right? But I do want a consistent red line in my blogging, writing and designing.

This post wasn’t planned. I wrote it because it has been sitting inside of me for ten minutes or so, from the moment I realized I truly realized I have trouble getting started today. Blogging helps me do that, because just by writing a post my mind focuses and gives a gentle push in the right direction.

Firing up Photoshop and reading up on the Ericsson style guide doesn’t feel as hard anymore. Thank you, blog with persistent and patient readers.

Two themes delivered, feels great 0

I delivered two Wordpress themes today. Hopefully I’ll be able to link to the sites using them pretty soon. So yeah, client stuff. I’ve got a bunch of concepts spinning in my mind so hopefully I’ll be able to get going. This blog needs some love, you all know that of course, and I’m gonna finish up the two other projects that are on my table this week or the next. Well, not finish but at least push them out of my hands for a while. How’s that for being cryptic huh?

My crossgrade for Adobe Creative Suite arrived, got installed and works like a charm. I need my Photoshop, like most designers. And 901am got posts today as well. All in all I’m pretty much steaming along.

Feeling better just rocks. Almost back to my own self. I’m going to celebrate that with a sturdy single malt away from the computer.
