Server madness 1cmnt

Not this server for once though.

Man, I’m so tired. My weekend consisted of trying to restore a big Swedish site on a server with a burnt out disk. The hosting company did a great job setting up a new server for me, but DNS’ can’t be re-pointed to a new location instantly, and besides they couldn’t start restoring data from the dead disk until Monday so… Well, that was my Saturday night.

Sunday was all code, and today I’ve restored 50% of that same Swedish site, leaving me a full day behind schedule for an upcoming relaunch.

Doing stuff on the server now as well, so heavy on the poor ol’ Firefox that I can’t use it while it’s working. I probably pasted a little too many SQL commands there… Writing this in Safari, which actually isn’t half bad anymore.

Yeah, I feel just a little bit sorry for myself right now. This week will just get better though, and yes, that’s irony for you folks. Funeral on Friday and it involes taking a trip and staying from home two nights, which I hate.

My schedule is crying tears of blood and I just want to sleep.

Deep breaths, one step at a time. Sooner or later it’s a new week, with the prospect of things working out better.

Trying to grasp 2006 4cmnts

Right. 2006 is wrapped up and the new year is a couple of days fresh. Did I achieve what I set out to do and did I learn anything? That last part is the easiest one to answer; of course I did. It’s all about learning, isn’t it?

2006 was the year when I decided that the Swedish market was too small, that I wanted to find a new audience and try my wings, so to speak. Actually, I think I dove into that route the year before really, when I decided to monitor the blogosphere, Web 2.0 and new media in general on the international side of things. As opposed to the national (Swedish that is) which is restricted, stale and boring.

I started writing in English on a professional level, freelance here and there, and then joined PDF gaming magazine PTD. It worked. I didn’t expect that, people who know me well thought it nice that I for once was uncertain and modest about a new venture. Not that I’m the bragging type, I just tend to have a set mind to what I can achieve, and if I don’t for any reason then I won’t move in that direction. Going international, as in writing in English, was something I truly didn’t know if I could manage. As in manage well enough, not actually manage: I want to be good at what I do, I want to learn and I want to evolve.

It worked out nicely, and left me with a throbbing thought of why I hadn’t done this before. Modesty might be a virtue, but it’s a bloody shackle as well. Add uncertainty and you have a mountain of negative karma to overcome. I doubt I’ll make the same mistake again, but who knows.

The Blog Herald took me on, via Matt Craven. That was an experience, a learning one. When I moved to 901am it was as a much more experienced blogger, but still a learning one.

I launched Bloggertalks, and will take it a step further this year. I got design gigs, with more lined up, and I got to see a blog launching schedule fall to pieces. Will have to make up for that in the coming weeks, which is less of a problem than one could imagine since most of it is out of my hands by now. Or rather, not relying on me, this for once feels kind of nice. Nevertheless, it’ll certainly feel good when the last blog in the first sub-network goes live in April or so.

2006 has been a chaotic and at times hard year. The last three months have been tough, to say the least. I’m working way too much, balancing old projects with new ones, freelancing, doing design gigs and letting off products to make room in my crowded schedule. A web worker isn’t supposed to have normal working hours, but these last few months have been ridiculous. January will be no better, but I’ll cope for a while.

I have no resolutions, only lots to achieve. A personal time frame is being made, and goals are being set. I’ll share, to be sure, during the year. And most likely look back at 2007 when the year ends, with fog clouding the events as they always tend to do in my world. Create, and move on. React, and move on. Exist, and continue.

I never was the sentimental one.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone walking through Berlin on New Year’s Eve. Fireworks ruled the streets, and the sky, with young and old, intoxicated and careless, firing from every corner of the street.

It was not a pleasant experience, not even remotely so. The sirens that littered this pseudo-festive experience all night long proved that the occurrence not only was unpleasant, it was also disastrous for some.

A half a bottle of Irish whisky at the hotel room proved to be a far more entertaining way to celebrate the first day of the New Year.

Welcome to 2007. Enjoy the show.

You know, people should just get Firefox. Really. My life would have been so much easier then, and you don’t want me to suffer, pull my 3mm long hair and scream obscenities on the inside?

I thought so. Get it. Thanks.

I hate Monday mornings (don’t we all). Thousands of entries in my feed reader, 60+ e-mails I really need to respond to by the end of the day, 20 or so possible topics to write about, last stuff to haul out of the old office this evening and an already cramped schedule that’ll force me to 14 hours of work each day if I’m to piece it all together.

And the milk’s gone bad.

I hate Monday mornings.

Every now and then I get this craving to wipe Windows out and go 100% opensource. That is, install a Linux desktop distribution. I (almost) always stop myself before committing to it since I really need a few programs that haven’t got good enough counterparts. The main problems being Adobes’ Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator. Sure, The Gimp is nice and all but there just aren’t any opensource application that comes near to these pieces of software. More

I’m sitting here, one (planned) hour of work left but I can’t bring myself to do anything serious. Plug out the microphone, set Skype to away and fire up Windows Media Player (bite me, Itunes).

Indesign sits there with stuff to do, and sure – I’m getting some of it done, but not in my normal speed if you know what I mean.

I really should be writing something else at the moment. News, articles, The Blog Herald posts – anything really. But sometimes things just doesn’t work out that way.
