There are times when you need a lot of computer power, and hence a strong and powerful operating system (OS for short), and there are times when you don’t. Like when you’re on the road and just want to read up on RSS feeds, maybe write a blog post, or browse the web like everybody else. When you’re doing that, there’s really no need for the OS to be as fleshed out as Windows, Mac OS X, or even most of the Linux distributions out there. The web browser is your OS, and the websites your applications.
That appeals to me, as you probably know by now. There’s so much bloat in all the operating systems today that just hogs your computer. I really do like OS X on my Mac Pro, and it is certainly necessary for me to have a fully fledged OS when I’m doing design work. Read more →
I installed Windows XP on my Kohjinsha yesterday, finally gave up on Ubuntu. That’s after I’d gotten almost everything working on it though, the thing that made me switch was the poor performance of Flash.

Yesterday I installed the Ubuntu Linux distribution on my Kohjinsha. Spent an hour trying to get it to boot correctly from an USB stick, then gave up and bought an external DVD, which worked right away. So now it’s running Ubuntu, boots up at 10 seconds or so (to login screen), and is way faster than Vista Home which was on it from the start. Read more →
Every now and then I get this craving to wipe Windows out and go 100% opensource. That is, install a Linux desktop distribution. I (almost) always stop myself before committing to it since I really need a few programs that haven’t got good enough counterparts. The main problems being Adobes’ Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator. Sure, The Gimp is nice and all but there just aren’t any opensource application that comes near to these pieces of software. Read more →
